Amede Soundsmith – Flashing Lights

Amede Soundsmith is a singer, beat maker and mix/recording engineer from East London who’s submitted many an EP and track to the inbox but unlike previous emails, the Flashing Lights EP caught me at the right place and right time. I began to listen and finally understood, not only did I finally understand but I was in an environment where I could listen to the EP with no distractions. It was at this point that I realised that my ears were finally ready to consume such beautiful and trance inducing music.

KO: Where are you from?

AS: I’m from the sunny side of East London with Nigerian & Zambian Heritage.

KO: What’s the meaning behind the name Amede Soundsmith?

AS: It is what it is really, Amede is my real name which means ‘water has no enemy’ and Soundsmith is something I created myself from blacksmith, which is one who work with metals and a locksmith, one who creates keys and locks. I produce art using sound not just as singer or beat maker, but also as a mix/recording engineer and radio selector hence the name Soundsmith. All in house I guess!

KO: How would you describe your music?

AS: Phrraa! Well. This question gets me every time. I like to call it, Electric Soul, Electroganic, Alternative Progressive blah blah…. not too sure to be honest. Some call my music Experimental Hip Hop, and others call it Future Soul, at the end of the day we always compare what we hear to the closest other thing to it that we know of. I’m not against being placed under and genre, many artists out there complain about that ish… ”ah! I don’t wanna be put in a box”, …but if it makes it easier for your listeners to find you then BAM! That what you want right? [#PassionateRant LOL]

KO: Musical Influences?

AS: In my early teens, Joe! The first song I ever performed was Stutter! When I was 17, The Soulquarians… Anything by Dilla or by Stones Throw Records got the green light with me. Of late it has really been a mix of M.I.A., Frank Ocean, Friendly Fires, Dam-Funk, Kanye, Theophilus London, Dorian Concept, Jesse Boykins, Hudson Mo, Gold Panda, not forgetting… Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick & Marc Moulin! Kwes, Sampha & Azekel are three of my favourite UK artists right now…Google them!!! “…if you don’t know, now you know n****” #NotoriousB.I.G.

KO: Upcoming projects, collaborations and tour dates we should look out for?

AS: Hmmm that would be telling! I’m actually gearing up to start recording the next EP with even hotter production, we I think so lol. And I’m thinking about the next two projects after that one #ForwardThinking . I’ll doing more stuff behind the scenes with Azekel and a few others which are to be confirmed. Nuff said!

What I love about Amede and artists in a similar vein is that they are unafraid to explore the boundaries, they are unafraid of letting go of all restrictions whether structural, sonically or conceptually. For Amede, music doesn’t seem to stop at mere self expression or creativity, I detect an underlying passion to bridge the gap between corporeal and ethereal, Primrose Hill and Labyrinth being perfect examples.

Amede Soundsmith to me will sit in the same iPod playlist as Quadron, Kwala, Boom Clap Bachelors and Made In Heights, all of whom I’ve discovered on a whim and gone on to listen to their music near enough every single day.

3 Reasons Why You Should Listen To Quadron

Quadron are a Danish duo consisting of vocalist Coco O. and multi-instrumentalist/producer Robin Hannibal. The pair were introduced by a mutual friend and decided to name themselves Quadron as a respectful nod to their heritages being 1/4 black. Their sound is a mixture of folk, soul, pop, and electronic music. What makes Quadron stand out from the pack is their subtle and often sparse productions, each song giving Coco’s vocals and Robin’s instrumentalism room to combine and shine alone.

It all began with a 104rog remix of Average Fruit…

I discovered Quadron through a Seattle producer called 104rog who had remixed their single Average Fruit. After hearing and listening to this remix countless times, I embarked on a research mission to find out what their music sounded like and discovered they were also two members of the Boom Clap Bachelors. Since discovering their self titled debut ‘Quadron’, it’s been on loop. It’s addictive, thought provoking and calming. Listening to this album allowed my thoughts to manifest and run rampant without keeping track of time, nor the amount of times I had listened to the album over and over again.

A Game of Comparison.

Coco O. is [ridiculously] skilled when it comes to throwing down vocals, as Robin Hannibal is with the instrumentation. She bends with the wind, moulding herself to all aspects of Robin’s compositions, creating the perfect musical partnership. Coco’s voice is far from Florence Welch‘s (Florence and The Machine) level of overbearing and sometimes gaudy tonality, it’s light years away from Beyonce Knowles‘ vocal and star spangled showboating, and much less troubled with pain riddled vulgarity of a smokey, untamed, and bastardised style of Amy Winehouse.

Coco’s vocals are understated, humble, subtle, and endearing, directly reflected by the soundscape painted by her partner in crime, Robin Hannibal. The two combine to become the sweet whispers from your star crossed lover whilst wrapped in the confines of your duvet on a cold winter night, staring up at a blanket of stars through the skylight window in your loft converted bedroom. [Descriptive cringe overload.]

Favourite Track: 09. Far Cry

This is a dark spiral of pleasant melancholia which captures all manner of melodramatic sentiments. I haven’t heard such a haunting, emotive, and near tear jerking track do it so subtly. At times it can be an uncomfortable listen but that’s what has you coming back for more. The vocal pauses lead the way for contemplative breaks, where the melodic loop of instrumentation allows you to dig up, digest, and deal with all the emotional turmoil of last seasons broken heart, which had been long buried and forgotten. It’s beautiful and cringe inducing, it lightheartedly expresses the darkness of waking up to nothing the day after. Robin’s instrumentation provide a warm reassuring embrace to Coco’s cries of despair.

Lana Del Rey – Born To Die (Long Overdue Review)

Lana’s a hottie. Lana’s got a nostalgic and cinematic voice. Lana hooked up with the right producer for the album. Lana’s album contained no tracks that I wanted to skip. Lana’s album was epic. Lana’s voice was accentuated by the soundscape. Lana did her own thing. Lana carved her own lane. Lana stuck two middle fingers up at the techno-urban-amalgamation-pop trend. Lana Del Rey has dropped an album that will result in every other vocalist following suit. Lana Del Rey I love your album and everyone who loves ‘genuine’ music loves your album. Lana I apologise for getting the album as a leak but we enjoyed it and I will buy the hardcopy because the album is epic. Lana I will buy a ticket to your show when you visit London. Lana I respect your artistry. Lana I love that you have made a work of art that plays out like a movie. Lana you embody nostalgia and cinematic music. Lana I admire the way that you allow the music to speak for itself and don’t distract the listener with shallow spectacles.

Lana I’m going to buy this on CD, I don’t buy CDs but one day I’m going to get you to sign it when we meet. Lana I understand that a lot of critics have written off your album but I think that in this day and age of hyperreality, people forget that it’s the music that matters and how it makes you feel. Lana people get it twisted probably because you’ve got no electronic arpeggios and dance club singles with the “oh ah oh” ad libs featuring punk mcs like Flo Rida and Pitbull. Lana they need to realise that you don’t need WillIAm with his fucked up hairdo to sell records, you’ve just got to be sincere, capture the right sentiments and people will always relate to it. Lana thank you for delivering such a great album, I apologise for not going into the specific highlights of the album but people reading this will only realise the reason once they listen to it… No words can articulate a sentiment, you’ve just got to put this album on and enjoy the movie.

K.Flay – I Stopped Caring In ’96 (Music)

Where were you in 1996? I was on the cusp of a transition; second half of the sixth grade, starting high school in september where I’d be travelling 8 miles across town to go to school. It would be the first time I’d wear a blazer, shoes, shirt, tie, and trousers, the first time I’d carry a pencil case and rucksack to school. 1996 was the year I began to grow up, it was the start of my life outside of the bubble that was my small town, the year I began my adventure to find the treasure that was to stop caring about all the trivial nonsensical judgements imposed upon me by other people.

This release came out a while ago but I’ve just discovered it, I love it, I can most certainly relate. K.Flay separates herself from her female counterparts who came to the forefront in 2011 such as Kreayshawn, Iggy Azalea, Azelia Banks etc because she’s the ‘girl next door’ who happens to live in the basement where she spends most of her days writing, producing and recording her own music.

I Stopped Caring In 1996 is K.Flay’s chronological soundtrack to her adolescent struggle to become an adult. The album is split into three parts:

  1. I Stopped Caring
  2. I Feel Everything
  3. Everything Is Nothing

My favourite song has to be Less Than Zero because it’s so powerful. The beat and the crazy guitar riff -courtesy of sampling XX’s Crystalized- are mind blowing with compliments from her lyrical flow and delivery.

Directed by Frank Door
Produced by Chante Cardoso / Element 151

I think I love K.Flay so much because she’s comfortable with being herself, she’s sincere and doesn’t ascribed to the hyper sexualised/animated characteristics of her 2011 contemporaries. Bear in mind that K.Flay released her first project back in ’09 and has averaged two albums a year ever ever since, which are all written, produced and recorded by herself -impressive!

McKenzie Eddy – Do What You Want To (Video)

I’ve been admiring this lady from a distance and I can’t make up my mind, I’ve downloaded a few mixtapes from her but failed to listen because I haven’t been in the right frame of mind. I keep hearing a few bits and pieces but I haven’t heard the right track until this…

It’s on the same instrumental that Curren$y used for ‘Boarding pass’ and I think she does a pretty great job at sitting on it -minus the flange and modulation effects. I’m still waiting to hear the right set of songs from her but I love her voice and pronounciation -not so weird when you think about it- and the visuals are magnifique, another thing you gotta love about DD172.

Three Reasons To Love Lily Allen

This woman is a fucking legend! Many didn’t get a chance to listen to the earlier material that came before the debut, one of my all time favourite albums but here are three songs that she covered and smashed to pieces…

This is someone who had natural skill when it came to music, so natural that it was normal and simple enough to put down when she became jaded.

I really need to hear a full on Rap album from Lily because she can rhyme like a mofo.

::Made In Heights:: – Aporia: In These Streets (Album)

I don’t think there’s anyone else in the world who I’ve had the option of downloading their release for free but decided to purchase the music because it was so fucking good. While most artists are busy emulating the last successful release in the pop charts, ::Made in Heights:: are busy creating something special. It’s not your bog standard ‘amalgamation’ -urban electronica mash up malarky, it’s inventive innovative juxtaposed bricolage.

Click To Buy/Download

::Made In Heights:: lift elements from the genres of Dubstep, Rap, Drum and Bass, R&B, Folk, and Pop, with unquestionable panache to create a subtle sound which simply cannot be classified nor put into any categorised box. There’s some songs that shouldn’t work, you know if it were made by any other person/group it would simply sound generic but the manner in which the two elements of ::Made In Heights::, producer Sabzi and vocalist Kelsey ‘Kelz Bellz’ Bulkin, combine adds a uniqueness that is unparalleled in anything deemed to be a pool of their so called contemporaries (no gibberish).

Basically Sabzi seamlessly mixes the experimental with the generic whilst cross pollinating mixing and production techniques associated with particular sub-genres, which culminate into a soundscape that Kelsey blends into effortlessly. Her voice is what distinguishes ::Made In Heights:: from all other bands and collaborative projects that have tried to do the same and failed. The chemistry, mechanics, and architecture of the album is nothing short of perfection. They offered it out for free but I decided to pay because when I heard the opening song, Wildflowers, I was sold from the first line and the beat drop.

Bandcamp | @MadeInHeights | Facebook

I love this band, I love this album, and I encourage everyone to PAY for their music. I also recommend that you cop the preceding EP, Winter Pigeons.

The Broke Graduate Playlist

At the moment I’m sick, and I’m apart of the ‘broke graduate with £16k worth of student debt hanging over their head’ demographic. I am one of many who has just spent three years wandering through the promised land of academia -graduating with a 2:1 Bachelors degree- who is now faced with a vast open ocean, with no map to aid my navigation. I seek the Golden Fleece, the much sought after ‘well paid Graduate salary’. I have no ship, I sail on the humble raft of my certification -my academic credentials and with little or no industry experience nor connections, many of us shall perish out on the barren seas if the Gods on Mt. Olympus turn a blind eye to our suffering. Some graduates get caught in the dangerous, low paid, high pressure sector of retail where the plan to ‘earn some extra cash’ turns into a ten year managerial ordeal; living for the 31st of every month to get drunk and drown their sorrows in consumerist intoxication -gradually sliding down the greasy totem pole, going from ‘high end’ High Street store to ‘Pound Land’ whilst others do things ‘just to get by’, which have nothing to do with what they studied in the first place. It can be a cold and disheartening time, I myself have been very pensive as it’s all you can do when you’re sick and bed ridden. I created a playlist whilst I lay on my sick bed, laptop on duvet, worrying about my career and financial future whilst I should be nursing myself back to life…

Melodrama aside, enjoy…

My sentiments exactly.

Fellow graduates we’ve gotta stay positive and optimistic, we create our own futures so start yours today by creating your own opportunities and your own luck. It’s like my senior at Defected said ‘It’s up to you to judge how much your times worth’.

Think about it…

LDFD – Outta Control (Remix)

I was randomly going through soundcloud and found a DJ Clap page, I clicked on it, listened, and found nothing on the net except this on Xlr8r…

Arizona’s DJ Clap, who’s been busy putting together a nice catalogue of footwork-leaning tracks for the past few years. If this remix is any indication, DJ Clap makes footwork tracks like The Field used to make techno tracks—melodicly rich, super repetitive, chopped to all hell, and bizarrely catchy. Is Arizona the new home of burgeoning footwork? No, probably not, but DJ Clap has definitely soaked up some distinct influences and turned them into something rather intriguing. (xlr8r.com)

When I first heard some of her tracks I thought…

’WHAT THE FUCK HAS THIS BIIIIOTCH BEEN SMOKING!?

… but I was patient with it, I had to be. I listened to every single song on the soundcloud, bypassed all my music preconceptions and stood outside of the box or rather boxes, for a moment.

I loved some of the intros, especially ‘Something Very Wonderous’ but I simply couldn’t keep up. The track featured below is not only the best song on DJ Clap’s soundcloud, but also the first… I’d be interested to hear your take on it.

Lykke Li – Little Bit (Video)

This song popped into my head on the way home and I remembered how much I loved it. I haven’t listened to it in ages, years in fact, so today it’ll be on loop. I’ve never seen the video, and I happened to find the lyrics pasted to the video so I thought we could all sing-a-long to the song together (holding hands beside a camp fire or just prance around doing her segmential rip off thriller move she turned into a dance of it’s own). I also forgot how beautiful Lykke Li was too…

“Ooooooooo Errrrrrrrrr she’s quite lush!”

Hands down
I’m too proud for love
But with eyes shut
It’s you i’m thinking of
But how we move from A to B?
It can’t be up to me
‘Cause you don’t know
Eye to eye
Thigh to thigh
I let go

I think i’m..

A little bit, a little bit
A little bit in love with you
But only if you’re
A little but, a little bit, a little bit
In lo-lo-lo-lo-love with me
Oh

Ooo-ooo…

And for you i keep my legs apart
And forget about my tainted heart
And i will never ever be the first
To say it
But still I,
Yes you know I..I..I..
I would do it,
Push a button
Pull a trigger,
Climb a mountain
Jump off a cliff,
‘Cause you know baby
I love you love you a little bit
I would do it, i would say it
I would mean it, we could do it
It was you and i and if only i..

I think i’m
A little bit, a little bit
A little bit in love with you
But only if you’re
A little but, a little bit, little bit
In lo-lo-lo-lo-love with me

Come here, stay with me
Stroke me by the hair
‘Cause i would give anything, anything
To have you as my man (2X)

A little bit, a little bit
A little bit in love with you
But only if you’re
A little but, a little bit, little bit
In lo-lo-lo-lo-love with me

I’ve just copied and pasted the lyrics into the track metadata on iTunes! (truth)
